HAMPTON - Civil Rights Activist (1960s), Rufus "Rudy" Langford, 80, transitioned peacefully into JESUS CHRIST'S eternal LOVE, on March 10, 2014 . A native son of Hampton (Phoebus), Rudy Langford became one of Virginia's most prominent Civil Rights' icon over the past thirty years. He was predeceased by his parents, William R. and Hattie Lassiter Langford; and by all of his siblings: Arthur William Langford; Bud Langford: John Langford; William R. Langford, Jr.; Jerome Langford; Hershey Langford; Emma L. Fleetwood; Janie L. Hendricks; Delores "Cutie L. Messiah; Arlene L. Liggins; Mattie L. Butts; and Gwendolyn Langford. Mr. Langford attended Hampton City Public School and graduated from the historic George P. Phenix High School on Hampton University's campus. He served his country as one of the elite of the U.S. Marine Corps. He received an associate degree in Business Administration from the Peninsula Business College (Newport News); and later graduated with a B. A. degree in Accounting, with honors and among Who's Who of Students and Colleges & Universities, from Strayer University (Washington, D.C.). Mr. Langford professional career was diverse as he worked as an Adjudicator and as an Accountant for the United States' General Accounting Office; and worked as the Clerk of Circuit Court, Washington, D.C.; and later worked in the district's Department of Corrections. Upon retiring, Mr. Langford enjoyably worked as the Postmaster of Hampton University, and as a Lecturer. One of Mr. Langford's proudest moments was the initiation of an internship program for Hampton University's students to observe judicial/court processes in the cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Richmond, Virginia, under the tutelage of attorneys and other judicial professionals. In 1955, Mr. Langford married Marion Nance Mills of Washington, D. C. In 1957, Rudy Langford joined the front line ranks of the Civil Rights' Movement, under Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and served fearlessly for 10 years. Mr. Langford has held memberships in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People: Southern Christian Leadership Conference; National Urban League; Congress of Racial Equality; and the National Action Network/No Justice No Peace. Over the past three decades, as the State President of the Virginia Coalition for Justice for Civil Rights, Mr. Langford has founded twenty-four Branch Chapters in Virginia's 24 cities and 31 counties. During his tenure as the Coalition's State President, Mr. Langford has argued, mediated, and solved, for people of all races, 1000 cases involving the violations of individuals' Civil Rights. Even as Mr. Langford's health was beginning to fail over the past few months, he was resolute in fighting on behalf of individuals' civil rights - as the files were still in his hands and the phone calls were still being made! He is survived by a loving family: a special niece, who was reared as a sister, Edmonia L. McNeil, of St. Louis, Missouri; two paternal sisters: Blanche Perry Robinson and Margaret Perry Price; an only daughter, Brenda Mays Murchinson-Avent; a granddaughter, Theresa Sabrina Mays; three great-grandchildren: Meneka Belcher; Michael Belcher; and Maishayla Luster; four great-great grandchildren: Navaeh Prentiss; Namiyah Boyd; Namahri Boyd; and Nahmir boyd; a host of nieces, nephews, and a number of devoted friends.
