NEWPORT NEWS - Thomas Edward Maxwell, Sr. transitioned into eternal rest on March 10, 2014 at Sentara Careplex. He was born on April 1, 1939 to the late Walter E. Maxwell and Lizzie Courts Maxwell. He was raised in Newport News and graduated from G.W. Carver High School, class of 1957. After graduation, Tom entered the U.S. Air Force and retired as Master Sergeant in 1977. After his military career, he spent 20 years employed by Tenneco (Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company) and retired in 2002. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Charlie H. Maxwell, Harold Maxwell, Sr. and Dr. W. Henry Maxwell; sister, Sadie M. Turner and granddaughter, Sterling E. McIntosh. Tom was a loving kind and compassionate man who was loved by his family and many friends. He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 24 years, Naomi B. Maxwell; four sons, Thomas E. Maxwell, Jr. of Newport News, Anthony T. Maxwell of Hampton, Michaels L. Maxwell(Gloria)of Franklin and Kelvin O. Maxwell(Stephanie) of Hampton; one daughter, Rev. Angela B. Chester(Amoa) of Long Beach, California, one brother, Wesley L. Maxwell of Newport News; four sisters, Pauline M. Jones and Shirley D. Satchell of Newport News, Sallie M. Staton and Gwendolyn Hawkins(Samuel) of Hampton; thirteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and a special goddaughter. Viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m. ,Sunday, March 16, 2014 and a wake will be held from 4-6 pm at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, March 17, 2014 at Gethsemane Baptist Church 5405 Roanoke Avenue, Newport News, with Dr. Dwight Riddick as Eulogist. Interment will follow in Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA
