James F. Cope

James F. Cope, Palmyra, died at his home, Wednesday, July 28, 2010.

He is predeceased by his parents, James T. and Gertrude R. Cope; wife of 55 years, Laverne Naomi Cope; infant daughter, Darlene Nan Cope; and sister, Verna Cope Bullock.

He is survived by his daughters, Geraldine "Jerrie" Smethurst of Palmyra, Sharlene Cope of Palmyra, Arlene Salaverria of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Roxene Turner of Richmond; three sons-in-law, nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cope was a pearl harbor survivor, retired Army Officer, and retired civil servant. He was a member of Fork Union Masonic Lodge #127; Harold R. Stephenson Scottish Rite Association; Knight's Commander Court of Honor, Valley of Richmond, Orient of Virginia, and Grace Episcopal Church, Bremo Bluff.

The Cope Family will receive friends for fellowship from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store. Please call 434-589-8374 for Directions.

Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, August 1, 2010, at Grace Episcopal Church, Bremo Bluff.

Full Military Honors and Masonic Rite Ceremony will be held graveside.

Reception will immediately follow at the church perish hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake Moticello Rescue Squad, 14 Slice Road, Palmyra, VA 22963 or The Scottish Rite Childhood Learning Center, 202 Hermitage Road, Richmond, VA 23227.

I worked with Mr. Cope at Foreign Science and Technology Center in the early 70's. He coached a girls softball team that I played on with his daughter Sharlene. It was my greatest priviledge to have known him. My deepest sympathy to the family. June Whitlow DeGraaf

The members of the Phair family are so fortunate to have known Jim Cope. He was a gentleman in all regards. I know all will cherish fond memories of him.
