Christine Panek Obituary

Christine Zamoyska Panek

Christine Zamoyska Panek, born in Poland in 1925 to Nathalie Lubomirska Zamoyska and Constantine Zamoyski, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2009.

Christine authored "Have You Forgotten?", a memoir of her experiences during World War II and her involvement with the Polish underground fighting against the occupying Germans. After the war, she and her husband, Julius Panek, moved to Boston and for many years she raised money speaking about her experiences to help her family left behind in Poland. Shortly after her husband's passing in 1969, Christine moved to Kennebunk, Maine with her mother. Following her mother's death in 1985, Christine chose Scottsville, Virginia, as her new home and spent her last 24 years there enjoying the companionship of her dog, Tildy, and the birds, squirrels, and deer which frequented her yard.

Christine is survived by a sister, Barbara Zamoyska Iwanski Wartenberg of Kennebunk, Maine, and Barbara's five children; a niece, Margareta Lindstrom Jacobson of Kennebunk, Maine; a cousin, Elizabeth Ollier of France; the Deland family, longtime friends whom she referred to as "adopted" family; and many more friends and family members.

Christine was especially grateful for the special care given her over the years and especially in her last difficult few weeks by Dr. Rama Marri. Christine will be missed by all who knew her.

Services will be private.

Donations in her memory may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.

I woke up this morning remembering Christine and found my way here. I met Christine in the small town we lived in in Virginia in 2000. She was a dear friend to me and my life has been truly enriched for knowing her. I have not forgotten . Sending Love to Christine and all of those whose lives were also touched by this brave and resilient woman's life. Remain in peace dear Chrisine

Many years ago I found Ms. Zamoyska Paneks book at my mothers house. The story was not only amazing, but nearly identical to my own mothers experience. My mother was also born in 1925 in a village very close to Zamoyskas. My mother suffered many of the same experiences but she was unable to speak about her past for more than a few short minutes before shutting down. This book was like my mothers voice in many ways. It helped my mom tell her story and it helped me share that story with thousands of students over the course of my career as a high school teacher. I was so moved by this book that i actually found Ms. Zamoyskas phone number and called her to thank her. She was amazingly gracious towards my intrusion and vehement in her desire to do her best to make sure these lessons would not be forgotten. Now, my relatives that remained in the homeland (an area that became a part of Ukraine after the war), are in the midst of another war. I am alarmed by the similarities of the current war compared to WWII. I am very proud of this woman for her efforts, accomplishments and noble endeavor. An honorable life well-lived.

Dear Family of Christine Zamoyska-Panek:
I have just read the memoir of hers and felt very moved by the story of her past.
I was trying to learn more about the country Poland to know more of what took place since my grandmother came over from Poland as a child. I am 57 now and was blessed to have read the book "Have you forgotten" and wanted to write a thank you note to Christine for the courage to tell. I do hope this message gets to one of her family members so that you know what took place is not forgotten by her book.

Christine was a treasured friend of our whole family, many members of which have already passed on. As children, my brothers and I delighted in Christine's presence at our grandmother's Sunday dinners in Concord, Massachusetts. Her commentary on world events, politics, and every-day minutiae were always to be listened to and savored. We knew this even as children.

Later, after Have You Forgotten was published, we read her memoir with awe and deepened appreciation for all that Christine accomplished and endured, before we knew her.

We all, as a family, will never forget Christine!

With love to all who loved and who dearly miss Christine,
Mary Wadleigh
