Dorothy Jones Hughes

Dorothy Jones Hughes, 87, of Orange, died Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

She was born October 20, 1922, in Charlottesville, a daughter of the late Joseph Fielding Jones and Lucy Kate Cook Jones. She was the wife of the late Claude Everett Hughes.

Mrs. Hughes was a retired nurse from the Gynecology Oncology Department at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Orange.

In 1955, Dorothy won second place in the Pillsbury Grand National Bake-Off in New York City.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Anne Smith and her husband, Ed, of Orange and Claudia Jean Hughes of Newport News; one son, Donald Lee Hughes and his wife, Lil, of Orange; six grandchildren, Mark Hughes and his wife, Kelly, of Richmond, Laura Hughes of Richmond, Kristen Lohr and her husband, Jesse, of Orange, Kelly Jones and her husband, Billy, of Orange, Rodney Shipp of Troy, and Jennifer Hughes of Newport News; and seven great- grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 12 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2009, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange with Pastor Thomas Bernard and the Reverend Mark Hughes officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 143 West Main Street, Orange, VA 22960.
