Elizabeth Garland Yates
Elizabeth Garland Yates, 90, of Albemarle County, departed this life on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Garland; her husband, James Yates Sr.; four brothers, Ralph Carter, Daniel, Dallas, and Clarence Garland; and two sisters, Sally Turner and Katherine Carr.
She received her formal education in the Albemarle County School System. She worked as a cook for many years at several fraternity houses. Her favorite pastimes were spent cooking, listening to music and watching sports events, but most of all her most treasured time was spent with her beloved family.
Her survivors include three sons, James Jr., Daniel Yates, and Edward Early; two daughters, Jane Yates Waller and Gertrude A. Yates; two brothers, Robert Garland of Gordonsville, Virginia, and Thomas Garland of Keswick, Virginia; four sisters, Chassie Hayes of Detroit, Michigan, Myrtle White, Mildred Mitchell, and Mary Harris of Keswick, Virginia; nine grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Cismont, Virginia, with the Reverend Dr. R.A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Zion Hill Baptist Church.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at the University of Virginia on 4 East.
