Hazel Showalter

Hazel Ray Tyree Showalter, 92, of Waynesboro, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009, at her residence.

She was born on Thursday, May 24, 1917, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Charlie A. and Charlie Bell S. Tyree.

She was a member of Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren. Mrs. Showalter had retired from Conagra after 20 years of service, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, on September 8, 1975, her husband Claude Milton Showalter, preceded Hazel in death. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley Ann Fisher; sisters, Helen Wood and Hattie Stewart; and brothers, Everett, Gilbert, Hubert, Herman and Tucker Tyree.

She is survived by her daughters, Frances Sandy and her husband, Jimmy, of Waynesboro, Phyllis Ward and her husband, Buddy, of Waynesboro, and Betty Newbegin and her husband, Lee, of Florida; sons, Charles Showalter and his wife, Evelyn, of Ruckersville, Hilton Showalter and his wife, Lorraine, of Waynesboro, and Paul and David Showalter, both of Waynesboro; a son-in-law, Lester Fisher of Hampton; a sister-in-law, Lena Tyree of Williamsburg; 17 grandchildren, 25 great- grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; as well numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren, 19 Browns Lane, Waynesboro, VA 22980, with Pastor John Foster and the Reverend Dee Flory officiating. Interment will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at the church.
