James Dubinski Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on Apr. 11, 2010.
James Dubinski

James Dubinski, 91, after leading a robust life, passed away quietly on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Colonnades facility in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born in Chicago in 1918, he attended the local schools where he athletically excelled in swimming. By 1941 he joined the navy and served in the Pacific on an LST. After the war he returned to marry Ann Brlecic, move to Milwaukee, Wisconsin raise; two sons, David and Donald and become a successful tavern owner, stepping into the family business. With 18 years downtown and 27 years at the southside location, "Jim's" was well known. Along the way, he met countless people, many who became lifelong customers and friends. "Jim's" was highlighted in the news as "more than a neighborhood social club", but as a "warm gathering spot where all were welcome to participate in life, sharing their views, politics, and humor." He and Ann enjoyed their retirement years in the beautiful state of Virginia.

He is survived by his brother, Ray, in Chicago and his son, Donald.

We wish to thank the outstanding care given to him by the University of Virginia medical staff of doctors, nurses, specialists and caregivers at all their facilities where the patient's needs were always paramount. We also wish to thank the very personal and heartfelt post care given by Hill and Wood Funeral Home where there will be a private ceremony.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

To the Dubinski family; our sincere sympathy goes out to you at Jim's passing. We knew Jim as a generous, intelligent, learned, patient and humorous man. "Jim's", whether on Clybourn or Howard was always the place to be, whether you were alone, went to meet someone or came in with your group. It was all because of Jim: who and what he was. Whenever one was at Jim's, they were in the company of the good, the famous and the infamous. Between his various bars, he literally hosted several generations of some families, ours included. Milwaukee's famous "corner tavern" way of life was seriously wounded when Jim left the scene. Whether we're visiting Milwaukee or talking on the phone with family or friends there and in other parts of the country, the subject of Jim Dubinski always comes up. What a guy! To the Family of Jim Dubinski,
How sad to learn of Jim's passing. Our last correspondence with Jim was several years ago. We have fond memories of spending time at Jim's with dear friends and with Jim and Ann in the 70's. They truly welcomed our family and many others especially at the holidays. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's family.
