Jean Thomas Moore

Jean Thomas Moore of Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, at the age of 80.

The second youngest of 11 children, she was born in Salem, Virginia, on July 21, 1930, a daughter of the late Henry Jordan and Effie Lee Smith Thomas.

On June 13, 1960 she married Sam B. Moore who preceded her in death on October 26, 1988.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Earnest L. Thomas, Herman L. Thomas, Alfred R. Thomas and Wayne H. Thomas; and sisters, Mary O. Thomas, Ora T. Garrett, Lura T. Vest and Ruth T. Hodges.

Jean graduated from Radford University and received her masters from James Madison University. She had previously taught at Forest Park School in Roanoke, for a brief time in Germany and for several years at Keister Elementary in Harrisonburg.

She was a member of the VEA, Overseas Teachers Association, Kappa Delta Pi Alpha Chi Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution Massanutten Chapter, previous board member at Mary Baldwin College, charter member of Lakeview Golf Course, fifty plus year member with the Uptown Bridge Club and a faithful member of the Board of Trustees at Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center.

Following her teaching career, she and her husband Sam, built a successful real estate business, Moore Properties LLC, which Jean continued to run following her beloved Sam's passing. Jean was an active community member through her involvement with Rockingham Memorial Hospital where she assisted with the RMH White Rose Giving Circle and her contribution to the recent capital campaign as a Patron of Health. Most importantly, she was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church on Court Square in Harrisonburg.

Jean is survived by her loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Margaret M. "Margie" and Doug Kellett of Fayetteville, Georgia; her sisters, Ruby Jobe of Salem and Charlotte Lichenstein of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.

Jean was the perfect combination of the brightest, quickest mind, incredible wit and actively loving heart. She was devoted to her husband, her daughter and son-in-law, her sisters and brothers, her beloved bridge club and friends. Margie and Doug would like to personally thank the care givers who were constantly by her side.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg with Doctor John Sloop and the Reverend Doctor Fred Holbrook officiating. A graveside service will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
