Kyle O. Wood

Kyle O. Wood, 93, of Ruckersville, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.

Kyle was born September 24, 1916, in Albemarle County, Virginia, a son of the late George L. Wood and Elinor B. Cox Wood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Elizabeth McDaniel Wood; three brothers, Tremper Wood, Tandy Wood, Ogden Wood; four sisters, Margie Williams, June Wood Rouse, Wanda Elaine Amos and Virginia Everlast Wood; two daughters-in-law, Evelyn Bennett Wood and Gloria Mace Wood; two grandchildren, Joseph Mullins and Mary Wendy Wood.

Kyle was employed in Maryland at a local tin mill followed by a prestigious trade at the shipyard as a welder during World War II. He moved to his farm in Ruckersville in the early 1940's where he resided for 69 years.

He enjoyed helping his community, neighbors and other farmers.

Kyle was a member of the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren in Ruckersville for over 65 years where he served as a trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Kyle loved his family and had a special place in his heart for children. Above all else was his love for God.

Kyle is survived by four children, Warner Wood and his wife, Lucille, William Wood, Virginia Wood, and Sarah Mullins and her husband, James, all of Ruckersville; 11 grandchildren, Timmy Wood, Miriam Howe, Tommy Wood, Dinah Knapp, Mark DeMastus, Teresa Martin, Tandy Wood, Phebe Dickerson, Donnie Collier, William Mullins and Sonja Garton; 21 great-grandchildren, Kelsey Wood, Kathleen and Christian Howe, Mckenzie Wood, Haley, Tristen, Katie and Shawn Knapp, Samuel Wood, Alex, Kyle and Ryan DeMastus, Lawrence Thompson, Wendy and Julia Martin, Nicholas Wood, Robert, Kyle and Billy Dickerson, Hannah and Gage Collier; and many other loving family members and friends.

The family would like to thank a very special granddaughter whom Kyle thought of as a daughter, Phebe Dickerson and her husband, William, and their children, Robert, Kyle and Billy, for all of their loving care of Kyle. Their care and support allowed Kyle to live at his beloved farm until the end.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at the Ryan Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren with Pastor Gary Sheffer and the the Reverend Mark Holder officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren Children's Ministry, 986 Cedar Grove Road, Ruckersville, Virginia 22968.

Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I remember when we first moved to the Ruckersville area and started atteding church at Cedar Grove. Kyle had just lost his wife and when asked why he was at church - he simply responded - where else would I be. He will be missed by everyone that he touched as he truly was a great man. It won't be the same driving down Rt 743 and knowing he is no longer in his house. My prayers and thoughts are with the family during this time of griefing.
