 Lewis M. Mason Jr. Lew Mason, 77, of Charlottesville, died at home on Sunday, November 11, 2012. The only son of Lewis and Mae Patterson Mason, he was born in Charlottesville on March 5, 1935. He graduated from Lane High School, where he was a member of the band and the football team. A music and theatre enthusiast, he worked as a manager at both The Jefferson and University theatres in Charlottesville.
After serving his country in the United States Army, he joined Braniff Airways in 1956 as a ticket agent, launching a long and passionate airline career. In 1970, he joined the FAA as an air traffic controller, and worked towers in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dallas, Texas, Roanoke, Virginia, and Newburgh, New York, before returning home to CHO for the final 13 years of his professional career. An avid historian, he shared time with Mr. Jefferson, working at Monticello during his retirement years. He was proud to be a part of the Monticello family and cherished his time there. Lew's friends spread across many age groups, many more states and all walks of life. He was greatly admired as a mentor, a friend and a true Southern Gentleman. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann (Schwalb); daughter, Margaret Ann of Dallas, Texas; son, Mark and wife, Joan, of Atlanta, Georgia, and son, Michael of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has one grandson, Mark Andrew Mason Jr. Also surviving are sisters, Sandra Livingston of Richmond, Virginia, Carolyn and Larry Lambroff of Newport News, Virginia, Joan and Lennart Stromberg of Richmond, Virginia, Jean Varner of Charlottesville, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2012, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held 12 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Riverview Cemetery, the Reverend Gerald Musuubire of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Palmyra officiating.
