Michael "Mickey" Lee Cantrell

Michael "Mickey" Lee Cantrell, 70, of Rocky Mount, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010, in Charlottesville, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He was born in Pound, Virginia, on December 28, 1939, the son of the late Fitzhugh Lee Cantrell and Tottie Baker Cantrell.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and David Cantrell.

He is survived by his son, Michael Lee Cantrell; and daughter, Chesten Cantrell of Rocky Mount; two sisters of Charlottesville, Frances Cantrell Roberson and Lena Cantrell McNicholas.

He was a graduate of Randolph Macon and in the 1970's, was Clerk of Circuit Court of Wise County and later served as assistant to Commissioner of Revenue. He moved to Rocky Mount in the 1980's, where he ran a business until his retirement.

Mickey was an avid sports fan, music lover, enthusiastic golfer and a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. He belonged to Rocky Mount Christian Church, where he sang in the choir for a number of years.

Mickey's devotion to family and friends is unequalled and those who knew him always recalled his kindness and cheerfulness. Even with the burden of Alzheimer's, he remained pleasant, cheerful and kind. His sense of humor never left him and he loved to say something quirky then laugh and say "that's a joke."

The family's gratitude is extended to his loving caretakers at Morningside especially Annette Putman, Tanya Banks, Carol Flores, Shamita Wells and Cristin Catron. Dr. Mark Lepsch assisted.

Memorial services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Rocky Mount Christian Church, 120 South Main.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2010, a second memorial service will be held at Pound United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Bolling Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association in your area or Mountain Empire Older Citizens Inc. P.O. Box 888, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219.

We will remember Mickey for his warm smile, and quick wit. He always had a story or a joke to tell when we went into the store. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
