She was born on December 7, 1941, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Clyde Parker Slavin and Gladys Ann Ashley Slavin.

After retirement from Sears with 18 years of service as an Interior Decorator and following a lung transplant at University of Virginia in 1992 with full recovery, Patricia returned to school and obtained Masters Degree in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Upon graduation in 2000, she returned to work in various locations in the Charlottesville area and then started her own private practice in social work which she continued until her recent illness. She was a past volunteer with the American Lung Association, the Girl Scouts and the Cub Scouts. She was also closely affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, and travel, including Smith Mountain Lake.

Surviving her are two sons, Timothy Quinn Spencer and his wife, Karen, of Charlottesville and William Parker Spencer and his wife, Jennifer, of Barboursville; the father of her children, Harry Edward Spencer of Charlottesville; an aunt, Betty Ashley White of Halifax, Virginia; a cousin, Linda Pruett of California, and her daughter, Donna, of Washington State; and many other cousins; and her faithful companion for the last five years, Larry Harmon.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home with Mr. Stan Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgecrest Baptist Church Cemetery in Lovingston at 2:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at the funeral home.

The family suggests that any desired memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 9221 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, VA 23235.

What a woman! So, so many, including me, were helped by her. I really couldn't have made it without her. We'll just have to keep the stories alive so she can continue to be an inspiration to others.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Pat. She was such a great person and wonderful help to me on my journey to becoming licensed as a counselor. She supervised me during my residency and was always a wealth of information and assistance. I will miss her smile and wit. I was so blessed as so many others to have known her. John Stone

Pat was patient, tolerant, kind, and loving. All these attributes she shared with me and with many mutual friends, and with people whom I will never meet. Our world is a better place because of Pat. She will be missed, but she lives on through her family, friends, and those directly or indirectly inspired by her strength and grace.

Pat Slavin had a servant's heart. She used the opportunity that transplant provided to earn an advanced degree and worked to help people. She was selfless to a fault. Her outreach and guidance was invaluable to her clients, her friends, her fellow lung transplant candidates and recipients. May she breathe freely now.

I am so sorry to hear about Pat. She was a great mentor to me through our 15 1/2 years together through our lung transplant process. In our transplant group throughout Virginia and Maryland, she was our transplant counselor and listened and guided us through all our problems before and after transplant. She was our angel.
I truly will miss her when I come down to Charlottesville- she was dear friend. She was one special person.
My prayers are with you. Jennifer

My heartfelt condolences to Pat's Family and Friends. Pat believed I was okay long before I felt okay. Her reassurance helped me to keep on keeping on. I will always be grateful to her for helping Beth and me. Memories of her full candy dishes and her beloved Yorkies in tow as we spoke the language of the heart are etched in my mind forever.
