Rebecca James Harrup, 79, of Charlottesville, passed away at the University of Virginia Medical Center on Saturday, March 20, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.
Rebecca was born on June 15, 1930, in Korea, Virginia, to the late Alvin Judson James and Julia Estes James.
A graduate of Culpeper County Schools, Rebecca went on to attend nursing school at Blue Ridge Sanitorium graduating in 1951. Rebecca served as a devoted nurse specializing in tuberculosis and education. After 39 years of caring service, Rebecca retired from the University of Virginia Medical Center in 1987. A selfless person to the end, she never put her needs before anyone else's.
She was a very active member of Hinton Avenue United Methodist church serving in multiple roles in the United Methodist Women and in her Sunday school class. She was also active in the Blue Ridge Nurses Alumni helping to plan yearly events that she always enjoyed attending with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Braxton James and Robert James.
She is survived by sisters, Mildred Chapman of Crozet and Judy Chandler of Viewtown. She is also survived by her children and their spouses, Al and Paula Harrup of Viewtown and John and Athlene Harrup of Charlottesville; her grandchildren, Jessica and Hannah Harrup of Viewtown and Glen Harrup of Charlottesville; and a great-grandchild Ryleigh Harrup of Viewtown.
She leaves behind many loving friends and family members whose lives she has deeply touched. She never met a person she did not impact in some way. Those of us that were fortunate enough to have had her in our lives will forever have a void that only she could fill.
