William Shumate Obituary
William Dallas Shumate Jr., 85, of Waynesboro, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2009, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation in Fishersville.
He was born December 23, 1923, in Waynesboro, the son of the late William Dallas Sr., and L. Vianna (Coyner) Shumate.
Mr. Shumate was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country during World War II. He earned the Silver Star for action in 1944. Mr. Shumate was a member of the Staunton VFW Post 2216, as well as a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro for many years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shumate was preceded in death in by a son, David Shumate; a daughter, Rebecca Shumate; and a sister, Evelyn Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Helena "Patsy" (Saunders) Shumate of Waynesboro; son, William Shumate and his wife, Pamela, of Stafford; a sister, Marianne K. Jensen of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren, William Lee Shumate and Jennalee Ashby Shumate.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 South Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia, with the Reverend Robert F. Humphrey officiating.
Those desiring are invited to send memorial contributions in honor of William D. Shumate Jr. to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 South Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
