Diane T. (nee-Rotondi) Kafel

AGE: 66 • Whippany

Diane T. (nee-Rotondi) Kafel, Age 66, passed away with her husband, Henry at her side on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Care One at Hanover. Born and raised in New York City, she received a BA and MA in Art from Hunter College in Manhattan. She then went onto become a teacher for the New York City Board of Education where she worked for 5 years before retiring in 1972. She came to Whippany in 1972 with her husband. There she became a well-known community, political and environmental activist as well as a historical preservationist. One official said of Diane "…her enthusiasm for and interest in politics was equaled by her love of history and its preservation." Diane's activities in politics centered on the Republican Party. She was a member and former President of the Hanover Township Republican Club. Also, she was a member and former Recording Secretary of the Morris County Women's Republican Club and a member of its Executive Board. Diane also served on the Morris County Republican Committee for 12 years and some as Vice-Chairman of the Hanover Township Municipal Republican Committee. She believed in good government by personal participation. Diane had a 32 year relationship with the Morris County Historical Society. There she had been a docent, Chair of many committees, was a member of the Board of Trustees, and Vice President. In recognition of her service to the Society, she received a Congressional Citation and Resolution from the Morris County Board of Freeholders upon her retirement from the Executive Committee in 2010. Diane was also a member of the Washington Association and the Theodore Roosevelt Association. She believed understanding the past would be a window to our future.

As a member of the Hanover Township Seniors Club, Diane served as the Sun Shine Committee, using her talent as a calligrapher to brighten people's lives by sending cards with her very special touch. Diane enjoyed music, playing the piano, graphic arts and had a great love of animals. She loved her family, was a loyal friend, a strong ally to many, and a worthy opponent to those she had differences. Her smile would light up your heart and she will be missed.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Henry J.; her brother, Jerry Rotondi and his wife, Chesire Fraser of Flushing, Queens; and her dear niece.
