Harold E. Benz, age 91, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013 at his home in Morris Plains, NJ. Born in Newark, NJ he was a graduate of Irvington HS, and New York University
. During WWII
, he served the US Navy
with distinction on a Destroyer/Minesweeper in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, NJ and the Randolph School District where he taught Industrial Arts for many years. He served as an usher at St. Virgil's Church in Morris Plains for over 65 years. In his retirement, he volunteered at Morristown Hospital, and the Morris Museum. In 2008 he was awarded the "Friends of History" award by the Friends of Historic Speedwell for his commitment and dedication in the preservation of that historic site. Friends and family will forever remember Harold as the guy who built the Wurlitzer pipe organ in his basement and threw the most amazing 4th of July picnics!
He is survived by his wife, Claire (Hennessey), and their three children, Mary Ellen Albin and her husband Alan of Morris Plains, Hal and his wife Joyce of Westfield, and Daniel and his wife Paulette of Rockaway Township. He is also survived by his brother, Charles and his wife Virginia of Alpharetta, Ga.; and his sister, Helen Benz of Morris Plains. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Emily, Amy, David, Alice, Jerome and Gina. He is predeceased by his sister, Mary Byrnes and her husband Robert of Morris Plains.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Doyle Funeral Home, 106 Maple Avenue, Morristown NJ, from 2 - 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday, June 10, 2013 at St. Virgil's Church in Morris Plains. www.doylefh.com
