John Cornish Obituary

John Vaughn "Jack" Cornish

AGE: 73 • Oak Ridge

On June 19, Jack Cornish died peacefully at St. Clare's Hospital in Dover, NJ. Jack, truly a free spirit, was an artist, teacher, sailor, and most important to him, husband, stepfather, and "Grampy" to his wonderful grandchildren. Jack was born in Belleville, NJ, in 1940. He graduated from Belleville High School, and received an MFA from Jersey City State College. He was a professor of fine art at Kean University for 45 years, spending many of those years as, Chairperson, Department of Fine Arts. Jack, and his wife, Gayle, were long time members of the Keyport Yacht Club, where they spent magical days and nights aboard "Moondance." Through the years, Jack was a mentor to artists and sailors, teaching not only skills, but how to find joy in these endeavors.

A Celebration of Jack's Life is being planned by his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to "Grampy's Paintbrush," a foundation that will provide scholarships for young creative artists in the schools that his grandchildren attend. Grampy's Paintbrush, c/o Gayle Cornish, P.O. Box 82 Allenwood, NJ 08720. Arrangements by Tuttle Funeral Home, Randolph (www.tuttlefh.com).

dear Gayle, I Was.A Classmate of Jack's, at JCSC and was so sad to hear of his passing. I can remember him always being ready with a comment that would leave us all laughing. Your family , kids and grand kids sound wonderful , I'm so happy that his life was blessed with creativity and filled with the love of a great family.

I shared four years with Jack at JCSC as an Art Major. He and Lenny Pierro were the stars of our class. I fondly remember the parties at their studio. He has joined Lenny as a star in the
heavens.

Professor Cornish favored my Kean University classes on Creativity for Prospective Teachers with workshops and discussions of what teachers could do in their elementary classrooms to foster creativity in Art. His programs were well received and successful. He made a difference!

Dear Gayle,
I'll always remember Jack with a smile on his face even though it's been decades since I saw him. I never heard an angry word from him and am so glad that he was part of our little Kean group of 'artsies'. I'm blessed to have known him and send you my sincere condolences.
What a lovely man he was.

Dear Gayle & Family,
I am so sorry for the loss of Jack. It was so obvious in his art that Jack was blessed with a great gift and always saw the beauty in an otherwise disheartening world. A very gentle man who taught and inspired many. May you and your family find peace and be comforted by God in this very difficult time. My prayers are with you and your family.

I will always remember Uncle Jack with that impish smile on his face. He was always so full of joy and it was NEVER boring when he was around. Such a wonderful sense of humor. He always had a joke to tell or funny story to relate or something thought provoking to say. I will miss him and only wish I had taken more opportunities to be closer to him and his family. Rest in peace Uncle Jack. You have left your mark on the world and it is a mark of love, caring and joy.
