Peter H.B. Frelinghuysen

Was born on January 17, 1916 and died in Morristown, NJ on Monday, May 23, 2011, age 95. He married Beatrice Procter on September 7, 1940. She died on June 3, 1996. Surviving are five children, Peter Frelinghuysen of New York City, Beatrice F. van Roijen of Washington, D.C., Rodney P. Frelinghuysen of Morristown, NJ, Adaline H. Frelinghuysen of New York City, Frederick Frelinghuysen of Tucson, Arizona, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

After graduating from Princeton University, and, in 1941, Yale Law School, he served in naval intelligence at the same time as his twin brothers, Henry O. H. Frelinghuysen served in the U.S. Army. After postgraduate work at Columbia University and service on the Hoover Commission, he ran for Congress in 1952. He was elected to eleven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, until his retirement in 1975. As a member of Congress, he served on both the Education and Labor Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was a member of the boards of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Botanical Garden, and The Garden Conservancy. He was also an Overseer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Besides his professional accomplishments, he was a profound influence on his entire family, a devoted friend to many and a loyal supporter of organizations close to his heart. The family thanks the kind individuals who cared lovingly for our father during his period of declining health.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 121 South Street, Morristown, NJ at 11am on Friday, June 3.
