AGE: 89 • Florham Park

Robert E. Filler, 89, long-time resident of Florham Park, NJ., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013. The son of Gustav Charles Filler and Ellen Tighe Filler, he was born July 31, 1924 in Irvington, NJ.

A combat veteran of World War II, he served aboard the destroyer USS Flusser DD-368 in the Pacific theater. After the war, he began a lifelong career as a field service representative for Honeywell Industrial Control Division. He met and married his wife Helen and moved to Florham Park in 1957 where they raised a family of four children. He and Helen were married for 62 years and are long-time members of Holy Family Parish.

A devoted husband and loving father, he was happiest when spending time with his family. Raised during the Great Depression, he strived to provide a better life for his children always stressing the value of hard work and the importance of a good education. Robert enjoyed the outdoors. He volunteered as an adult leader with Boy Scout Troop 107 while his three sons were scouts. He and Helen spent summers camping with their family in state parks in both New York and New Jersey. Their favorite camping spot was Montauk, Long Island. He was also an avid fly fisherman who plied the streams and lakes of northern New Jersey.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife Helen; their son Robert and wife Barbara of Richmond, VA.; son Larry and wife Anne of Windham, NH.; son David and Rita of NJ.; daughter Joanne and husband Christopher of Randolph, NJ.; and nine grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Aug. 29 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Church in Florham Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad, 60 Felch Road Florham Park, NJ 07932.
