Irving M. Valkys, a beloved husband and father who dedicated more than 45 years of his life to making Madison a better place through his numerous volunteer activities, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at Overlook Medical Center in Summit after a brief illness. He was 79 years old. Known around Madison for his sunny disposition and tireless efforts to help the community he loved, Mr. Valkys was born May 20, 1933, in Asbury Park. He grew up in Palisades Park and graduated from Leonia High School. He later attended Brown University, where he played football and graduated in 1955. After college, Irv served in the United States Air Force as a navigator from 1956 to 1959. A math major in college, Valkys worked in finance and accounting, serving as a financial officer at Tiffany & Co., in Manhattan and later in Parsippany from 1967 until his retirement in 1998. Known as Irv to his many friends, Mr. Valkys was active in youth sports for many years, believing that the bonds young people make through sports would serve them well as they grew into adults. He loved serving in the Madison Huddle Club. Mr Valkys served for many years on the Madison Housing Authority, most recently as chairman. He was a Cub Master and served on the board, and was treasurer of Madison Little League. He also was active for many years with Madison Junior Football. He served on the Madison Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Madison Affordable Housing Corp. Irv also served a number of years on the board of the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts. He was a Republican Committeeman and Treasurer of the Madison Republican Committee.
He leaves behind many friends, including his coffee club pals who he loved to see every afternoon. Mr Valkys is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan, his sons, Michael of Madison, and Eric of Dublin, Ireland; his sister-in-law Susan Mahler of Madison, and his nephew Ron Mahler, and niece, Chrissy Mahler.
