Jeannette Gadkowski

AGE: 98 • formerly of Chatham

Former Chatham resident Jeannette Gadkowski, 98, of Colorado Springs, CO, died on Thursday, March 7, 2013. She was born in New York, NY to the late Joseph and Mary Kiss on June 27, 1914. Jeannette graduated from Irvington High School in 1930 and received a BA from Upsala College in 1934, and a Master of Education from Rutgers University in 1938. She married the late Walter I. Gadkowski, and they lived together with their three sons in Chatham from 1950 to 1972, when they relocated to Tucson, AZ. Jeannette relocated once more to Colorado Springs in 1997, several years after husband Walter passed away. During her early career, Jeannette was an English teacher in the Irvington, NJ school system. She later left the teaching profession to raise her family and dedicate herself to her children and, later, her grandchildren. During her years in Chatham, Jeannette was active in the Chatham Woman's Club, the Garden Club, the Fish and Game Club Bowling League, and the PTA. After moving to Tucson, AZ, Jeannette became active in the Women's Auxiliary to the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers where she enjoyed doing volunteer work together with the many friends she and husband Walter made during his years as the Chief Engineer of the Anaconda Company.

Jeannette is survived by her three sons, Walter of Centerville, MA, Robert of Poplar Branch, NC, and Peter of Colorado Springs, CO, all of whom are graduates of Chatham High School. Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive her.

Jeannette's earthly remains will be interred at 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Fair Mount Cemetery in Chatham. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark in the name of Jeannette and Walter Gadkowski.
