James Francis Brady Jr.

James Francis Brady, Jr., 82, of Sparta, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Mr. Brady lived in many states along the East Coast, including Washington, DC., where he met and courted his future wife, whom he loved and adored for the rest of his life.

He settled in Mountain Lakes for 20 years until his family was raised. Upon his retirement, he moved to Lake Mohawk in 1993, but his heart was always in New England. He attended LaSalle Academy, Class of 1949, graduated from Providence College, Class of 1953, and Georgetown Law School, Class of 1956. After graduating law school, Mr. Brady enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served for three years as First Lieutenant at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. As a Labor Lawyer, he worked at NLRB and New Jersey Bell Telephone (Verizon) until he retired in 1992. Following his retirement, he volunteered as a Pro Bono Attorney for Legal Aid.

A devoted father who made many sacrifices for his eight children and fifteen grandchildren. His greatest joys in life were family gatherings with all his children an grandchildren, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving. He enjoyed camping with his family and loved New England, especially the rocky coast of Rhode Island. "The Rocks" were special to him.

A second generation immigrant from Ireland, Mr. Brady was very proud of his Irish heritage and being an American. While living in Mountain Lakes, Mr. Brady was an active member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church. He coached children's sports teams, was a member of East Orange Golf Couse, and a member of Wallkill Golf Course.

The son of the late James F. Brady, Sr., and Alma Margaret (nee Brady) Brady, Mr. Brady was also predeceased by a son, Eugene "Gene" Brady on August 4, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 57½ years, Marianne (nee Sanders) Brady; seven children, Mike Brady and his wife, Ann, of Roxbury, Patricia Hand and husband, James, of Bangor, Pennsylvania, Tim Brady and wife, Audrey, of Hamburg, Cathy Schalk and husband, Charles, of Flemington, Susan Milcsik and husband, Ken, of Edison, Elizabeth Gerhart and husband, David, of Urbana, Maryland, and Maureen Walsh and husband, Brian, of New Milford, Connecticut; and 15 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday at Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church, 294 Sparta Avenue, Sparta. Interment will follow in Good Shepherd Cemetery in Green Township. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton. Memorial donations may be made to Sparta Ambulance Squad, PO Box 246, Sparta, NJ 07871.
