Alexander Jay "A.J." Smith, 69 years old, died after a brief illness at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton, NJ on Friday, October 26, 2012. Born to Julius and Mary Smith in Denville, NJ, where he lived before moving to Jefferson Twp., NJ for five years and then Sussex, NJ for the last 40 years.

Mr. Smith served with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and then worked as a truck driver for Teamster's Local 560 at Tredway's Express in Boonton for 26 years. He also worked as a realtor for Weichert Realtors in Hamburg and Vernon Twp. and also worked as a saw operator for Titanium Industries in Rockaway, NJ for 5 years before retiring in 2008. He loved fishing, golf and feeding the birds and squirrels.

Mr. Smith is predeceased by his parents, Julius and Mary Smith, 3 brothers, Randolph L., Huburt W. and Julius R. Smith and a son, Robert A. Smith(1987) and was the beloved husband for 47 years of Carol A. Smith(nee Beers) of Sussex, NJ. Devoted father of Anthony J. Smith and his wife, Sandra of East Stroudsburg, PA, Daniel A. Smith and his wife, Lisa of Eatontown, NJ and Deborah A. Hazen and her husband, Edward of Sussex, NJ. Loving grandfather of Amanda, Daniel, Nicole and Kyle Smith, Brian and Jacob Hazen. Dear brother of Rudolph Smith and his wife, Jo Retta of Pell City, AL, Paul Smith and his wife, Linda of Lake Hopatcong, NJ, Leon Smith of Montague, NJ, Phillip Smith and his wife, Mary Ellen of Franklin, NJ, Wilburt Smith and his wife, Belinda of Leesburg, FL, Pauline Kramer of Montague, NJ and Mary Tintle and her husband, Robert of Bloomingdale, NJ.

The family will receive their friends at Ferguson Funeral Home, 27 Third Street, Sussex, NJ on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at Clove Cemetery, Wantage Twp., NJ.
