Robert H. Jones

AGE: 88 • Florham Park

Robert H. Jones died peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at the age of 88 after a short illness. Born on December 17, 1924 in Elizabeth, NJ, he grew up in Union, NJ and graduated from Union High School, in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy in December, 1942 and served aboard the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Carroll DE171 for 3 1/2 years. He married the love of his life, Ruth Parsons, in August of 1948. Bob graduated from Ithaca College in 1950. An accomplished trombone player, he taught instrumental music in New York Mills, NY and in Pitman, NJ. He was a high school band director at Columbia High School, in the Maplewood-South Orange School District for 35 years, and was also an instrumental music instructor in the Grade School and Junior High there. As an active member of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Florham Park, Bob served as an Elder and devoted choir member for over 40 years. He was an avid golfer, runner, bowler and softball player who also enjoyed traveling. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends, especially at his beach house in Duck, NC. He was very active in the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and started reunions of the U.S.S. Carroll DE171 over 20 years ago.

He is predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth, and is survived by his three children, Barbara Fisher and her husband, Bill, of Westfield, NJ, Robert S. Jones and his wife, Diane, of Cave Creek, AZ, and Nancy Jones and her partner, Beth Eastburn, of Lewes, DE; five grandchildren, Kim, Derek, Kristen, Brittany and Sutter, as well as eight great-grandchildren, Taylor, Emilee, Katelyn, Braeden, Colin, Declan, Ava and Lily.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 11:00am at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 144 Ridgedale Avenue, Florham Park, NJ. A private service will be held at 10:30am for family members only in the Calvary Memorial Church Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to Calvary Presbyterian Church, 144 Ridgedale Avenue, Florham Park, NJ 07932.
