Longtime Nacogdoches resident and supporter of Stephen F. Austin State University, Dr. Carl Ray Kight, died after a short illness on Friday, April 5, 2013. Carl was born Dec. 8, 1932, in Haynesville, La. He graduated from Haynesville High School in 1951 where he met Martha, the love of his life. Carl earned his undergraduate degree from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, La., in 1954. He received a Masters of Education degree from the University of Illinois in 1955 and a doctorate from LSU in Baton Rouge, La., in 1966. Carl taught at Fair Park High School in Shreveport as well as coached football and track. He was the assistant principal at Ridgewood Junior High before taking a teaching position at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. In January 1968, Carl moved his family to Nacogdoches, where he taught health and physical education at Stephen F. Austin State University for more than 28 years. Dr. Kight retired as the chair of kinesiology in 1997. He was well thought of by his students, athletes and co-workers, and an avid fan and supporter of all SFA athletic events. He was actually scheduled to start a relay on Saturday. Carl was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and a rod-wrapping hobby. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, Rotary International, Phi Delta Kappa, the Lake Naconiche Board of Directors and a steadfast member of the Fredonia Hotel breakfast group. Surviving Carl is his daughter, Susie Randolph and husband, Ricky, of Nacogdoches; grandsons, Derek Randolph and Bradley Carl Randolph; great-grandchildren, Brayden and Brandon Randolph, all of Nacogdoches; sister, Jane Kight Clements and husband, Rodney, of Lufkin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and good friends. Dr. Kight is preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Esther Kight of Haynesville, and his lifelong sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Martha Perry Kight. Pallbearers will be Ray Ashley, Jerry Dyes, Charles Grimland, Jeff Reed, Chris Sidnell and Chris Weiblinger. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Barra, Harold Hill, Ken Kenamer and Ray Worsham. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Laird Funeral Home. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. before the service.
