Graveside services for Dawn Tipps Burgess, 90, will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nacogdoches, Texas, with the Reverend Stephen Newton officiating and with Brad Morgan, pastor of Bonita United Methodist Church, assisting. Mrs. Burgess passed away March 26, 2007, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born January 5, 1917, in Zwolle, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Jacob "Jake" and Dovie Pearl Tipps. She is survived by her two sisters, Evelyn Fitzgerald of Tyler and Dana Poovey of Henderson. Mrs. Burgess taught biology at Nacogdoches High School for 33 years. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with master¹s degrees in both home economics and biology. It brought joy to her heart to touch thousands of young lives through teaching and later see them develop into their careers. She was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church¹s Mariner¹s Club, a lifetime member of the SFASU Alumni Association and a Girl Scout Leader. Though active in so many other activities, she was a devoted wife and mother. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Carroll Aubrey "Buck" Burgess. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Sue and Gary Atkins of Nacogdoches; one son and daughter-in-law. Dan Aubrey and Lynne Burgess of Austin; and a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Doug Clark of Nacogdoches. She is also survived by five grandchildren ‹ Scott Burgess and wife, Carrie, of Livermore, Calif., Steve Burgess of Austin, Jana Burgess Stauffer and husband, Barry, of Austin, Kim Atkins Montie and husband, Mike, of Bell City, La., and Deanna "DeDe" Atkins Brammer and husband, Aaron, of Paris, France; and seven great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers are Aaron Brammer, Scott Burgess, Steve Burgess, Mike Montie, Barry Stauffer and Bill Bryant. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to: The Nacogdoches High School Alumni Association at P.O. Box 2152, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963.
