Claire Louise Bunge went to be with her heavenly father on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Stallings Court Nursing Home, Nacogdoches. The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nacogdoches, with the Rev. Bob Kobler officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Claire was born in Wausa, Neb. on July 22, 1922, the oldest daughter of Clarence and Louise (Johnson) Swanson. She became a registered nurse and worked at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Neb. She married Roland Bunge on Sept. 11, 1944, who was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. They lived in New Jersey and Ohio, where their twins were born. Later they lived 18 years in Hawarden, Iowa where Rollie had a veterinary practice. They resided in Lake City, Iowa; Idabel, Okla.; and lastly in Nacogdoches. They celebrated 66 years of marriage together. Sewing, playing cards and games, and the accordion, and being with her faithful church families were favorite things she enjoyed. She loved music and was a church organist for 50 years. She was a 50-year member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and held several offices in the church also. Claire was a godmother to several children and a mentor to many. She had numerous lifelong friends all over the country. She was a resident of Stallings Court Nursing Home, where she helped to start a Bible study and a Sunday worship time. Survivors include her children, Allen (Gayle) Bunge of Spokane, Wash., Andrea (Morris) Peterson of Sioux City, Iowa, and Rick (Bonnie) Bunge of Westminster, Colo.; a sister, Valerie (Rev. Carl R.) Bloom of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren, Lane (Sarah) Peterson and Jonathan (Shantel) Bunge; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Lester and Lois Worsham and family, Tom and Judy Rainey, Bruce Cunningham, and Tony Sartain, all of Nacogdoches. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Dr. Eric Swanson. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church ESL Program in Nacogdoches. Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches is in charge of arrangements.
