Funeral service for Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Layton Hardy, 87, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010, at Laird Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Sevar officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Hardy passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2010, in Nacogdoches. She was born on November 22, 1922, in Chireno, Texas to the late Alma Palmer and Guy Vernon Layton, Sr. Dorothy was born in Nacogdoches County where she lived most of her life. While working as a seamstress at Mize factory she attended Nacogdoches Business College. After completing her course she was hired by the County of Nacogdoches where she worked for over 20 years. Dorothy loved the Lord and was a dedicated and loyal member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught a ladies Sunday School Class which was named in her honor. Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to seven children, seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and became known for her corn-bread dressing and sourdough bread for her family, friends and colleagues. Survivors include: daughters, Catherine Wolf of Greenville MS, Gaye Wells of Dallas and Ione Reese of Nacogdoches; sons, Henry E. Wells, Jr. and wife, Teresa of Stillwater, OK and Allen Wells of Houston; grandchildren, Lori McLaughlin Rastelli and husband, Jerry of Sugarland, Dee McLaughlin and wife, Stacy of Vernon, Texas, Heather Wells Patterson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brad Wells and wife, Sarah of Roanoke, Virginia, Stephen Hughes and wife, Adria of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Brian and Dan Reese of Nacogdoches; thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; brothers, Lamar Layton and wife, Eunice of Hunnington, G.V. Layton, Jr. and wife, Virginia of Brenham, Texas, Clifford R. Layton and wife, Nina Belle and Johnny Layton and wife, Doris; sisters, Laverne Sanders, Laura Blankenship and husband, J.D., Nina Huggins and husband, Don and Nelda Dyes and husband, Francis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar V. Hardy, daughter, Virginia Wells McLaughlin, son, Guy Murphy Wells and sister, Alma Mae Stewart. Pallbearers will be Brian Reese, Dan Reese, Brad Wells, Jon Blankenship, Jess Blankenship and Jay Lumbley. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Ministry. The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to A Pineywoods Home Healthcare and Hospice as well as Oak Manor Nursing home for the exceptional care given to our mother. We are grateful to you all for your love and compassion. Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2010, from 5-7 pm at Laird Funeral Home.
