Michael J. Gavin(1945 - 2014)

Gavin, Michael J., age 68, of Clinton Township, died on May 10, 2014. He was born September 8, 1945 to Marguerite and the late Joseph Gavin in Port Huron, Michigan, where he grew up. Called ‘Mick’ by his brothers and ‘Mike’ by everyone else. He got his first job when he bought a lawn mower on credit at the age of 14, mowing ten lawns a week to pay it off and save money for a new bike. After graduating from Port Huron High School, he served in the United States Air Force and then subsequently received an Associate in Arts degree from St. Clair Community College, a BA from Wayne State University and an MBA from the University of Detroit. He joined Detroit Edison in 1971. Among the many accomplishments of his 31 year career was establishing national drug control policy for nuclear power plants. Mike was also active in local affairs, serving the City of Fraser as Vice-Chair of its Parks and Recreation Commission, Vice-Chair of its Downtown Development Authority, and as a City Councilman. Mike was an avid golfer, playing the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, was a particular highlight. A photo of Mike on The Swilcan Bridge occupies a place of honor in their home. After his retirement Mike pursued a long-delayed project to document his family history and to trace his Irish roots back the mid 18th-century. He followed his ancestry back to mid-18th-century Ireland, he and Sheila visited their ancestral homes in Ireland. He is survived by Sheila O’Hara Gavin, his loving wife of 45 years, whom he met when they were both 13; his mother Marguerite of Port Huron; two sons, Shawn (Lisa) and Eric (Jennifer); two grandsons, Keean and Kyle; brothers, Daniel (Patricia), Brian (Karen), Timothy and Kevin (Allison); many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph; his sister, Susan; and brother, Stephen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Macomb Food Program or Forgotten Harvest of Oak Park, Mich.
