Colleen Susan Stringer Obituary
STRINGER, COLLEEN SUSAN; of Hadley Township; passed away suddenly in the morning hours of July 31, 2014; she was 67. She was born in Woodstock, Illinois on January 4, 1947, to Richard and Gloria Hennessy. She and her sisters Gloria (Charles) Zubek and Sharon (Douglas) Conquest enjoyed traveling back to the family farm in Illinois from their childhood home in Flint, Michigan. While attending the University of Michigan, she traveled the world with her Aunt Mary Hennessy, amassing her worldly knowledge and famous spoon collection along the way. Following a brief stint as an English teacher, she pursued and earned her Masters in Library Science from the University of Michigan and began working at Flint Public Library. On August 12, 1978 she married her soul mate, Kenneth J. Stringer of Beverly, Ohio. They would adopt three of their six children from Seoul, South Korea and raise their large family at their country home in Hadley Hills. Following the death of her husband in 1998, she began work at the Brandon Township Public Library. Her work as a reference librarian was her passion; as she mentored her children into adulthood, she stressed the importance of choosing a profession that you love, just as she loved serving her library patrons. She would reluctantly accept the role of Library Director in late 2013 and focus on protecting the livelihoods of the library staff while maximizing the library’s positive role in the community. An avid gardener, Colleen spent countless hours tending to her extensive gardens. She most looked forward to spending her days with family and friends. An annual family camping trip held a special place in her heart. She will be remembered for her unmatched grace and generosity, unfailing advice, zest for life, and her ability to make one’s most trivial favor or accomplishment feel like an act of heroism. She truly cared for all. She will be welcomed into heaven by her husband Kenneth, her parents, and brothers-in-law Charles and Douglas. She is survived by her six children: Andrea (Kevin) Grobe, Caroline Culbert, Melanie (Terry) Weathers, Daniel, Sean (Chelsea), and Ryan; six grandchildren: Jordan, Madeline, Garett, Ethan, Haley, and Hudson; sisters Gloria and Sharon; sisters-in-law Jo Ann (Thomas) Drake, Jeri Brown, and Judy (Thomas) Carlisle; numerous dear nieces, nephews, and cousins; her best friend Kathy Talley; and her two beloved collies Sophie and Jack. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2014 until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. from St. Anne Catholic Church (825 S. Ortonville Rd., Ortonville). Fr. Gerry Frawley, Celebrant. Rite of Committal to follow at Ortonville Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at COATS VILLAGE FUNERAL HOME-ORTONVILLE. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday. Donations may be made for a memorial in her honor at the Brandon Township Public Library, addressed to the Estate of Colleen Stringer, 7144 Park Ridge Parkway, Swartz Creek, 48473.
