Robert E. Haney Obituary
HANEY, ROBERT E.; age 92; born in Big Beaver Village (now Troy); died March 13, 2014, in Joshua Tree, California. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Sue (Motsenbocker) Haney in 2001. Bob is survived by eight of his nine his children; and by brothers, Col. Richard J. Haney of Silver Spring, Maryland and William V. Haney of Ortonville, Michigan. He maintained ties with Michigan, premiering his award-winning book, “CAGED DRAGONS: An American P.O.W. in W.W.II Japan,” in Troy in 1991 with a foreword by then-Senator John S. McCain, III who said “In this story are the lessons of Bob Haney’s salvation, as compelling today as they were when a 20-year-old Marine corporal dutifully obeyed his orders to buy his country a little time.” Haney survived the Bataan Death March, a voyage to Japan on the notorious “Death Ship,” and four years of captivity and slavery in a P.O.W. camp in Japan. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Oklahoma. He held management positions at Rocketdyne and Douglas Aircraft, working on the Apollo Command Module. On March 24, 2014 there will be a Funeral Mass in Ontario, California and a ceremony with Full Military Honors at Riverside National Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors.
