Mr. Vernon L. "Big John" McDonald Sr. Obituary
Vernon L. "Big John" McDonald, Sr. passed away February 14, 2013. Born May 18, 1924 in Maysville, West Virginia, to parents David and Cora McDonald, Vernon was a long time resident of Royal Oak, owning and operating AAA McDonald Tree Service for many years. Serving in the US Army during World War II, Vernon received several medals including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and valor. We will remember him for his larger than life personality, sometimes questionable sense of humor, his laughter and love of music, mastering most stringed instruments. Among his many loves were the love of his family and friends, hunting, fishing, flying, golfing, motorcycles, collecting guns, and good food. His memory will live on through the hearts of his loving wife of 56 years, Doris L. (Johnston) McDonald; his children, Leonard Stewart, Robert (Kathryn) Stewart, Linda (Larry) Serapilia, Vernon (Liesa) McDonald Jr, Loretta (Curt) Cwiek, Rockie McDonald, Kimberly (Kurt) Kaminski, John McDonald, Loleta McDonald; 19 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many lifelong friends. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him also know that the heavens are brighter and most certainly more colorful now that he has been called home. Always and forever, he will live on in our hearts. Funeral Services were held at Sullivan & Son Funeral Home in Royal Oak.
