Donald Stange

1934 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Stange, Donald; a dear husband, loving father and grandfather, and faithful friend, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 31, 2014 at his home in Rochester Hills, MI; at the age of 79. Don was born in Detroit, MI on April 29, 1934 to Gladys and Hugo Stange. He graduated from Detroit’s Mackenzie High School in 1952, and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Cape, on October 1, 1954. Don received a B.A. from Wayne State University where he played football, ran track, and was in ROTC. Upon graduation, Don served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in Texas, Florida, and Germany. After returning to the states, Don began a long career in Human Resources at TRW in the Detroit area. Early in his tenure with TRW, Don earned his Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State. Retiring from TRW after 32 years, Don became a Professional Ski Instructor and over the next 18 years introduced thousands of new enthusiasts to a sport he dearly loved. Don had many passions, foremost being his family. His four kids considered themselves lucky – growing up camping, fishing, skiing, and swimming in the backyard pool. Don loved to golf, playing courses all over the U.S., but was more than happy to play for many years in his local league with the Polish Century Club. And even though it was his wife who attended the University of Michigan, Don became a staunch supporter of Wolverine football. After retirement, Don and Mary Ann enjoyed many years of grandkids, active travel, volunteering, and winters skiing in Lake Tahoe. If Don wasn’t at one of his grandkid’s games, meets, recitals, or concerts, you would find him on a golf course, bicycling in some European country with Mary Ann, or hitting the slopes. Don was also an avid bell ringer for the Salvation Army, and was always happy to help out at the church soup kitchen with other members of St. James Episcopal Church. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ed Stange. He is survived by Mary Ann Stange, of Rochester Hills, MI; brothers Al Stange of San Antonio, TX, and Lewis Stange of Trilby, FL; son Scott and his wife Becky of Royal Oak, MI and their children Meta and Hugo; son Doug and his wife Kathy of Royal Oak, MI and their children Justine and Maxine; daughter Kim Casselberry and her husband Rollen of Incline Village, NV and their children Drew and Roxanne (and husband Michael Fernandez); daughter Karen Westin and her husband Steve of Holts Summit, MO and their children Emma and Hannah; and 19 nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. Don touched many lives by putting people first, making them laugh, and showing by example how to make every day count by living with humor, energy, and purpose. Visitation will be at Potere-Modetz Funeral Home (339 Walnut Blvd., Rochester, MI; 248-651-8137) on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, April 4, 2014 from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Saint James Episcopal Church at 355 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham, MI. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
