1923 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Margaret Snowden "Maggie" (Sutton) Bastien Obituary
Bastien, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Snowden Sutton, age 90, of Harrison Township, died on May 8, 2014. She was born on December 17, 1923 in Athens, OH to Roberta (nee Hull) and Clarence Sutton; and spent her childhood between Athens and West Union. After graduating from Athens High School in 1942, she completed a year at her hometown college, Ohio University, before joining her parents to work at the Point-aux-Barques Resort near Port Austin, Mich. At the resort, her fellow worker and friend, Patricia Bastien, set her up on a blind date with her handsome serviceman brother, John (Jack), who was coming home on leave. The resulting romance blossomed into a 65 year marriage, commencing in 1947. Jack and Maggie were a fun-loving couple, particularly enjoying travel, camping, dancing, listening to live music, and singing. Even in later years, Maggie could always be counted on to entertain with her signature song, ‘Sentimental Journey.’ Jack and Maggie spent their winters at the Crystal Bay Travel Park, Palm Harbor, Fla., running various activities, participating in outings, and generally enjoying the sunshine. Maggie nurtured her creative side with her love of painting. Her landscapes, especially, gave her great pleasure and satisfaction. Margaret was a beloved and doting mother to her six children, Patrick (Linda), Pamela Brown, James (Karen Radjewski), Robert (Cathy), Lynn (Thomas) Grimberg, and Philip. She was an especially attentive and loving grandmother to Dawn Reschke, Michael (Ann), Shaun (Tracy), Curtis (Carolyn) Brown, Craig Brown, Jason Brown, Scott, Richard, Paul, Samantha, Ryan (Kristie), Cameron, and Jonathon; her 20 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren. ‘Grandma Maggie’ created lasting memories by hosting family gatherings and festivities in both Michigan and Florida. Nearly all her grandchildren attended her 90th birthday party last December in Michigan, where they joined in a serenade of ‘Sentimental Journey’ with ‘Grandma Maggie’ and the rest of the Bastien family. Maggie lost Jack in June, 2012. She is also preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Clarys Holliday and Bernice Richmond; her brothers, Lowell and Robert; and her daughter-in-law, Cristi. In addition to her children and grandchildren; she is survived by her sister-in-law, MaryAlice Sutton (Lowell); and numerous nieces and nephews. Her favorite daily affirmation was “Good Morning! This is God. I will be handling all of your problems today. So, relax, and have a great day!” Visitation will take place on Monday, May 12 from 3-8 p.m., Scripture service at 6 p.m. at the Vick Funeral Home, 140 S. Main, Mount Clemens, Mich. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 11 a.m., instate at 10:30 a.m. at St. Hubert, 38775 Prentiss, Harrison Township. More information can be found at www.vickfuneralhome.com.
