"Aunt Roberta", as I have always called her, will forever be remembered as a friendly, intelligent, sophisticated lady... bright light in any room. I'm very glad I knew her.
I have a cherished memento of her that I see most days. It's a Hummel she gave my parents on the occasion of my birth. The little porcelain figure of a chubby baker holding a cake with his finger in his mouth (presumably covered with frosting a moment earlier) sat on a shelf in my parents living room during my entire childhood. My mother “held onto it” until I was old enough / responsible enough to possess it myself (they are delicate and fragile and I was prone to destroying such things in my youth). At about the age of 25 she gave it to me with several Christmas ornaments Aunt Roberta later gifted me.
Fast forward 25 years…by the grace of God I turned 50 this month.
This is significant to the topic at hand because this likely means Aunt Roberta thoughtfully selected, carefully held, gently wrapped and hand carried that gift across the street to my parents home on Buckingham 50 years ago to the month. The month of my half century birthday and, sadly, the month of her passing. This thought instantly raced through my mind the moment my sister informed me of Aunt Roberta's death.
I'm grateful for her gift, but more importantly, I'm grateful to have known the lady behind the gift. She was certainly one of our Heavenly Fathers finest creations.
Farewell Aunt Roberta…if you have a moment…please tell the other two great ladies of my life I miss them dearly. And I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
