OPELOUSAS - Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11, 2011 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Ghost Church in Opelousas for Herman J. Bertrand, age 84, who passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Opelousas General Health System in Opelousas.

Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. Jaison Mangalath, will officiate at the services.

Mr. Bertrand, lovingly known as "Mr. B," was a native of Plaisance, LA and a resident of Opelousas. He was a schoolteacher for 37 years and Assistant Principal at Sunset High. He was a member of the Retired Teacher Association and the AARP. Mr. Bertrand was a board member and Executor of Directors of the Boys and Girls Sanctuary in Eunice, and a member of the Knights of Peter Claver. Mr. Bertrand was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include one brother, Wilfred "Willow" Bertrand, Sr., of Lafayette; a nephew he raised, Joseph Guillory, Jr., and his wife, Linda; a foster son, Fabian Suarez, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham Bertrand and the former Amelia Malveaux; fours sisters, Bertina Bertrand (twin sister of Herman), Loney B. Young, Annie Mae B. Wilson, and Juanita B Guillory.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 7:30 a.m. Saturday until service time on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Herman Guillory, Fabian Suarez, Jr., Byron A. Young, Retell Bertrand, Leo Major, and EltonYoung. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Guillory, Jr., Wilfred Bertrand, Coach Ronald Baumbouree, Wilbert Ledet, Lawrence Simpson, and Kenneth Garrett.
