OPELOUSAS - Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Starlight Baptist Church (1552 Highway 3043) in Opelousas, LA, for Mr. Oliver Stevens, 86, who entered eternal rest, Friday, February 14, 2014 at his residence in Opelousas, LA.
Interment will be at Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas, LA. Pastor Paul Murphy officiating.
Oliver Ray Stevens was born on October 29, 1927 in Washington, LA to Freddie Stevens and Albertha Rideaux Stevens. He attended St. Landry High School. He was baptized by Rev. S.A. Crowley at Mohorn Baptist Church at an early age.
He was a World War II
veteran and recipient of the World War II Victory Medal. After leaving the military, he met and married the love of his life, Beatrice Amos. He later became a long distance truck driver until his retirement from Standard Fitting Company. Having a love for the law enforcement, he begins working for the St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department. He served with honor and respect for all until his health began to decline. Following in his parents spiritual footsteps, he was a long time member of the Star Light Baptist Church in Opelousas, LA.
Oliver Stevens leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 63 years, Beatrice Amos Stevens of Opelousas, LA; a nephew who was like a son, Paul "June" Amos (Helen) of Leonville, LA; a niece who was like a daughter, Sandra Hypolite (Arthur) of Houston, TX; one brother, John Stevens (Betty) of Houston, TX; two sisters, Norma Antoine (Frank) of Lake Charles, LA and Wilma B. Minix of Los Angeles, CA; one brother-in-law, Leonard Lyles of Oakland, CA; Three sisters-in-law, Mary Batiste of Opelousas, LA (who regarded him as a father), Betty R. Stevens of Lake Charles, LA, Rose Stevens of Los Angeles, CA, and former sister-in-law, Janelle Stevens of Lake Charles, LA and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.
Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his parents Freddie Stevens and Albertha Rideaux Stevens, three brothers, Fred, Irvin, and Wilken Stevens, and stepbrother, Adam Levy, three sisters, Ethel Stevens-Thomas, Lydia Stevens-Thomas, and Viney Stevens- Lyles.
Visiting hours will be observed from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Williams Funeral Home in Opelousas, LA and will continue from 10:00 AM until the time of service at Starlight Baptist Church in Opelousas, LA.
