Grier, Thomas Paul August 25, 1967 - January 31, 2013 Tom Grier was born in Dallas, Texas, to Helen and Charles Grier. Tom was an adventurer: Jet pilot, professional motorcycle racer, mountaineer and wilderness explorer, and blue water sailor. Tom's love of aviation led to numerous certification ratings, including multiengine jet flight instructor, and to the founding of Southwest Aircraft Management Company. As a motorcyclist, Tom raced motocross and road bikes as a hobbyist and raced Grand Prix and Superbikes as a professional. His affection for the wilderness began with the St. Mark's Pecos trip and grew from there. His passion took him to Himalayan ascents and, most dramatically, solo winter wilderness crossings of the Bridger Wilderness in Wyoming. Tom was also an oceanic sailor with Pacific crossings completed. Tom had a soft spot in his heart for animals, especially those with special needs. He adopted abused and handicapped dogs and worked on rehabilitating them. Tom was much beloved by his friends and family and is survived by his parents Helen and Charles Grier, his brother John Grier, his sisters Robin Vettoretti and Susan Grier, and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was interred on February 6, 2013, at Sparkman-Hillcrest Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.sparkman-hillcrest.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Operation Kindness in Tom's name.
