Athur H. Levine(1922 - 2011)

Levine, M.D., Arthur H. Arthur H. Levine, M.D., F.A.C.S., age 89, died on Saturday, November 26, 2011, following a courageous nine year battle with cancer. He was born April 7, 1922, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to the late Hymie and Bessie (Strean) Levine. He graduated from McGill University School of Medicine in 1948. On June 15, 1950, he was joyously united in marriage to Harriet R. Laub in Montreal. Dr Levine interned at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, completed a residency at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, and served a fellowship in vascular surgery at St Vincent's Hospital in New York City. He practiced as a general surgeon specializing in gastro-intestinal surgery in Montreal for many years, before relocating to Dallas, Texas in 1978. He worked in many hospitals in Dallas, ultimately retiring from Mesquite Community Hospital in 1998. Dr Levine was an avid learner and voracious reader his entire life. He embodied the spirit of a true Renaissance man, a lover of, and expert in, both the arts and sciences. He and Harriet became food and wine experts as part of their love story. They were on a first name basis with almost every fine chef, restaurateur and wine merchant in North Texas. They loved to travel to the California wine country, and made many life-long friends along the way. They were lovers and supporters of all the arts. They were regulars at the Dallas Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Dallas Symphony, Nasher Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, and many other institutions. Arthur was a member of Temple Emanu-El, Dallas, for many years, and contributed generously to many charitable organizations. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was also a member of La Chaine des Rotisseurs and the American Institute of Wine & Food. Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Harriet; his daughter and her husband, Ellen and Stuart Adler, Oakland, MI; his son and his wife, Ed and Jamie Levine, Coppell, TX; his daughter and her husband, Robin and Jeffery Harrop, Clinton, IA; five grandchildren, Robert Adler, Dallas, TX, Cameron and Amanda Harrop, Clinton, IA, and Lauren and Alex Levine, Coppell, TX. He is further survived by nieces, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Annabel. Arthur Levine lived an excellent 89 year life filled with joy and discovery. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Instead, relatives and friends are welcome to a celebration of his life which will be held at The Warrington, Reception Room, 3831 Turtle Creek Blvd, Dallas, TX 75219 on December 22, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the , North Texas Food Bank, or .
