Bill Baker

Baker, Bill W. Bill W. Baker passed away May 16, 2013. He was born January 30, 1923 in Hopkins County Texas to Sallie Dea Causey Baker and Henry Hasten Baker. After graduating from Sulphur Springs High School, he attended Sul Ross University on a music scholarship. That phase of his life was interrupted by World War II during which he served in the US Navy in the South Pacific as a torpedoman. Returning from the war to Grand Prairie, Texas, he and two of his brothers opened the Baker Brothers Cleaners operating both in Grand Prairie and in Irving. He also met and married the late Marie Crouch, owner of Marie's Dress Shoppe. Together they made a home and raised their son, Billy Baker Jr. who also preceded his dad in death. In the early 1980s he served as president of the board of directors for Grand Prairie Citizens Savings and Loan Assoc. Interested in many things, he was also an avid private airplane pilot and enjoyed not only the flying but also the mechanics of the plane. At one time he crashed his plane, walked away from the wreck, brought the wreckage home, rebuilt it, and flew the plane many times again. Bill was not only successful in all of his business endeavers, but also he was a determined survivor of a number of life threatening illnesses. In business and in health matters he demonstrated amazing self-discipline, work ethic, and regimen that defied failure. After Marie's passing in 1988 Bill met and married Thelma Wright. Together they shared many happy times with family and church friends both at the Hampton Place Baptist Church in Oak Cliff and the First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie where Bill served as deacon. He loved the Lord. In addition to Marie and Billy Jr., also preceding him in death were his parents, his two older sisters Ruth Lovelace and Edith Milliorn, his brother Henry Scott Baker, and a sister Doris who passed in infancy. He is survived and grieved by his wife Thelma Baker, his brothers Phillip Baker and Jack Baker, many nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends who loved him and whose lives were blessed by the sweet times he shared with them. A visitation will be held Sunday May 19, 2013 at Bean Massey Burge from 3-5pm. Services will be held Monday May 20, 2013 at Bean Massey Burge Chapel at 1pm with the interment to follow at Southland Cemetery in Grand Prairie, TX.
