Louis Edward Powers

Powers, Dr. Louis Edward Dr. Louis Edward Powers was born in Portales, New Mexico on October 9, 1935 to Floyd Jake and Mary Frances Trammell Powers. He had two older brothers, Jerald Wayne and Howard Gene, and all three of the Powers boys were stellar athletes in high school and college. Louis graduated from Portales High School in 1953 and from Eastern New Mexico University in 1957. He began his teaching and coaching career in Shamrock, Texas in 1957 and later coached football and basketball in Muleshoe, Texas. Louis obtained his Master's Degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1966 and became the High School Principal in Dexter, New Mexico in 1967. In 1970, Louis was awarded the prestigious Mott Fellowship in Education to attend the University of Michigan where he received his doctorate in Education and was awarded the Outstanding Dissertation honor. Dr. Powers served as a professor of Education at Eastern New Mexico University for several years until he moved to Dallas, Texas, and joined the Highland Park Independent School District as an administrator. Dr. Powers was the Principal of Hyer Elementary School until he retired in 2003. Dr. Powers attended both Highland Park Methodist Church and First Methodist Church in Garland, Texas. He was a volunteer at Baylor Hospital for many years. He enjoyed reading, studying the Bible, and attending the many school activities in which his grandchildren participated. He was an educator for 42 years and touched the lives, hearts and souls of many children, teachers and parents with his sense of humor, commonsense approach to problems and educational philosophies which focused on the right of every child to feel loved and important. He was an inspiration to many in the Park Cities and was loved by all who knew him. He will be missed. Dr. Powers is survived by his wife, Diane Onstot Powers, and his five children , Tonya Powers Johannsen, Randy Powers, Shawna Powers Johannsen, Marka Powers Herbert and Mark Onstot and their spouses, Greg Johannsen, Terry Johannsen, Judy Powers, Donald Herbert and Katrina Onstot and ten grandchildren, Randy, Kayce, Haleigh, Paige, Jordan, Reilly, Colton, Garrett, Reid and Mallory and by his sisters-in-law, Marjorie Powers and Pearl Powers. Visitation is scheduled at Restland Memorial Chapel, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75218 on Tuesday, March 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on March 13, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, 801 West Avenue B, Garland, Texas.
