Payne, Stephen Jon Stephen Jon Payne, age 53, passed away on April 6, 2013 in Coppell, Texas. He was born in Kansas City, Mo. to Ronald Walter and Sallie Joseph Payne. He graduated from Kirkwood High School, Kirkwood, Mo. in 1978. At a very young age, Steve discovered a passion for architecture and earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kansas State University, graduating in 1982. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He began his professional career in Dallas and became a board licensed architect in 1988. One of his proudest professional achievements was working for Halff Associates on the renovation of the Cotton Bowl for the Dallas World Cup soccer games. In 1998 he started Steve Payne Custom Homes and designed and built custom homes for many clients, earning a stellar reputation as a respected home builder and architect. Steve met his soul mate and the love of his life, Marla Newell Payne, in 1978 during his first few weeks at KSU. They were married in Dallas, Texas on September 1, 1984. His beloved daughter, Erin Nicole Payne, was the joy of his life. He is preceded in death by his grandparents and his father-in-law. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Marla; daughter, Erin; parents, Ronald and Sallie Payne; his sister and her family, Kathleen, Wes and Kyle Shimanek; mother-in-law, Phyllis Newell; sisters and brother-in-laws, Meta and Barry West and Marlys and Richard Gardner; as well as many beloved friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Coppell, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Erin Payne Scholarship Fund at any branch location of Chase Bank.
