Ruben Mesa Obituary

MESA, Ruben Rafael "Ben" Passed away on June 8, 2015, in Grapevine, Texas. He was 44 years old. Ben was born February 19, 1971 in Silver City, New Mexico to Ruben and Vivian Mesa who reside in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ben graduated from Silver High School, received his Accounting degree from the University of Utah, and his Executive MBA from the University of Texas Dallas. Ben worked for JC Penny in Salt Lake City and was subsequently transferred to the headquarters in Plano, Texas in 2004. Ben's most recent position was the Director of Accounts Payable at Heartland Automotive Services in Dallas, Texas. Ben's life was centered on his family, most importantly, his two sons, Zachary and Aidan. Ben was an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Coppell, TX. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Ben also played softball for ten years with the St. Francis Catholic Church in Frisco, TX. Ben was one of kind. His smile, laugh, and the way he could light up a room are traits he will always be remembered for. Ben was big in stature, bigger in heart, and lived life to the fullest. Ben dedicated his life caring for and helping young cancer patients, after surviving his own personal battle with cancer. Ben had a passion for sports, was a diehard Yankee's fan, and enjoyed coaching football and baseball. Ben was happiest spending time with JoAnne, and mentoring, coaching and loving Zachary and Aidan. He was a devoted son and brother, and loyal to the core to his many friends. Ben's baritone voice would instantly fill even a crowded room, and his hearty laugh, dynamic personality, and his gentle way with people will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Ben is survived by his two sons, Zachary and Aidan Mesa, his fiancé Joanne Blanchette of Flower Mound, TX, parents Ruben and Vivian Mesa of Salt Lake City, Utah; his two sisters, Monica Mesa Torres (Israel) of Phoenix, AZ, Selena Mesa Young (Cody) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Grandmother Delfina Mesa of Silver City , NM. His Aunts and Uncles include: George and Margaret Alcaraz and their two sons Matthew and Anthony of Detroit, Michigan; Eloy and Linda Mesa and family of Gilbert, AZ; Yolanda and Richard Warnack and family of Corpus Christie, TX; Greg Mesa of Silver City, NM and Antonio and Delia Bermudez and family of Lordsburg, NM. His nieces and nephews: Tomas and Oscar Young and Cristian and Alysa Torres. Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ramona and Angel Alcaraz and Gregorio Mesa. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, June 14th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Rolling Oaks Funeral Home, 400 Freeport Parkway, Coppell, TX 75019. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 15th at 10:00am at St. Ann Catholic Church, 180 Samuel Blvd, Coppell, TX 75019. For Utah family and friends, a memorial service will be scheduled in Salt Lake City, Utah at a later date. Please contact Starks Funeral Parlor for more details at http://www.starksfuneral.com/.

Ben was one of the coaches for my son, Dylan, in the Frisco Football League. I appreciated his attention to all the players and his strong, but kind demeanor. He set a great example and seemed to always give a lot of himself to make those around him better. My condolences go out to his kids, fiancé and entire family. He was a great man and should not have been taken so soon. I know his big smile, big heart and strong voice will be remembered for decades to come. I only knew him for 3 years, but his kind, gentle nature, not as common for a bigger guy, made an impression on me which I'll always remember.

There is no way to understand such a great loss: we send sincere sympathies to the whole Mesa family and Joanne at this sad time. The one certainty is that love never dies. Zach and Aidan, know that you are loved always--when you are tired and in need of strength, you will remember him, and in sunrise and sunset, and wind, and the sky you will remember him. So long as you live he will live, for he is a part of you as you remember him. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. --Aunt Cake and Grandpa Buzz

Ben,

I met you and Selena when I was 9 years old. Right away you became a friend to the family. You were always the fun outgoing guy in Silver City. I remember when my family and I moved to Las Cruces you helped us with the move. You started going to New Mexico State and we would have fun with you there and hang out at your dorms and you became friends with my friends cause everybody loved you. I remember when you got the green Thunderbird and got a Clarion stereo and packed woofers and the whole system into that thing and it would be bumping! Then you moved into our house for a while when you were still going to school at New Mexico State. This is when you and I became tight. I know I have never had a biological brother but you were the closest person I had to a real brother. You gave me advice about girls, sports, school, and faith and about so much in life. We had so much fun, got in a lot of trouble, laughed, cried, had serious talks, prayed together, and lived life to the extreme. You were there for me at a critical time in my life when I was beginning sports in high school and you were there to guide me like a big brother would.
When you moved to Utah we still kept in touch with each other. I remember when I found out you got cancer how upset I was. I remember how rough it was for you and the fight you had with it. You are so tough and you beat it!
I remember meeting your boys for the first time. I met Zachary when he was a baby. After you moved to Texas I met Aiden when you came to visit your parents here in Phoenix, he was already in elementary school. You were such an amazing father! Your boys were your life and your world. I knew this because they were mostly all you would ever talk about. You always wanted me to go see them play their sports. I still do want to go see them play. I know they will be successful in everything they do because of the drive and love you instilled in them.
In know when you got in a relationship with JoAnne she was special to you. I could tell when I met her the first time she was the one for you, good for you, and a good influence for your life.
From being at your services I can see how many lives you touched and all the people you had a positive impact on. You are loved and were the same guy with all of us as we all had a unique relationship with you. I know my life is better because you are part of it. I know a lot of lives are better because you are in them. I saved the voicemail you left me on my birthday so I can hear your voice whenever I want. It was one of the biggest honors I have ever had in my life to be your pallbearer. I love you brother, God Bless you, and thank you again for everything. I will see you again.

I worked with Ben at MetroPCS. His obiturary perfectly captured the essence of his personality. He was bigger than life, always kind, always friendly and always quick to tease you. Even when we were working through issues at work, he always made it fun. He was a wonderful co-worker. My sympathies and prayers for peace and comfort go out to his family, especially his boys.

I worked with Ben at metroPCS. He reported to me when he was manager of Accounts Payable. I am still in shock and pray for his family. I wanted to share with his sons that they were his number one priority every single day. He loved them so and I enjoyed hearing the stories about them. It made Ben glow. Be thankful for the incredible dad you had. His memories will be with you forever. He was an honorable man, and you should be forever proud of him. Dick Richardson
