Atkins, Charles M. Charles Maynard Atkins, 87, born March 9, 1925, passed away peacefully at home on February 13, 2013. The only child of Ross and Lelia Atkins, lifelong residents of Prosper, TX where they shared the duties of tending to the large family farm. Lelia taught at several area schools including Celina High School from which Charles graduated before attending Texas A&M University. Though a dedicated Aggie he eventually left to join the Merchant Marines where he served faithfully visiting many foreign ports until his commitment was fulfilled. Upon his return to civilian life, Charles settled in North Texas where he eventually became a highly respected and long-time employee of Washington National Insurance Company. He married his first wife, Annece Lasiter, with whom he fathered three loving children, Marcy, Bill and Anita. Later, Charles married the late Lucy Bratcher and retired. He then devoted most of his time and attention to his grandchildren, Alex Atkins, Jeremy and Andrew Gregg and to weekly bridge games with his long-time friends. After Lucy passed, Charles moved to his new home at Churchill Estates where he made numerous good friends including his closest companion, Fran McCullough. He is survived by his loving children, Marcy Jackson and her husband Jerry, Bill Atkins, and Anita Grisham and her husband Steve, his grandchildren Alex Atkins, Jeremy Gregg and Father Stephen Gregg. . Funeral Service will be held at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, Saturday February 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., with burial following at Ridge View Memorial Cemetery in McKinney, Texas.
