WELLSMAN, IDA RYAN "To learn and never be filled, is wisdom; to teach and never be weary, is love." Author Unknown Ida Ryan Wellsman, age 75, of Plano, TX, passed away on July 29 in Danbury, CT. Ida was born on May 5, 1938 in Galesburg, IL to James P. and Maude (Ray) Ryan. She grew up in Loup City, NE, later earning a degree from the University of Nebraska, where she was an Alpha Phi. After graduation, Ida moved to Orange Co., CA to teach. There she met and married Howard C. Wellsman, a Naval Officer. With their daughter, Beth, they lived in Washington D.C., Japan, NH, Hawaii and Great Lakes, IL. Upon Howard's retirement, they settled in Plano, TX, where Ida was an active member of AAUW, and was a founding member of both the Junior League of Plano and the Information and Referral Center of Plano. Ida returned to teaching in 1980, teaching theatre at Plano Senior High School for 19 years, and earning a Master's Degree from UTD. She received the Texas Educational Theatre Association Award for High School Educator of the Year in 1993, and was also honored as Plano Senior High School Teacher of the Year. After her retirement, Ida enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters and was a member of PEO, Plano Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the "Bookies" book club. She also continued the work she loved: coaching acting students, often helping them prepare for college auditions. "Miss Ida" had a profound influence on many theatre students over the years, as evidenced by the many notes of support she received during her illness. Her family continues to appreciate the memories of Ida that former students, co-workers, and friends have been so kind to share. Ida is survived by her daughter, Beth Bergman and her husband, Anthony, of New Milford, CT, and her granddaughters, Emma and Isabelle. She was preceded in death by Howard, her beloved husband of 48 years, her parents, and her brother, James P. Ryan. Burial will be at 10 am on Friday, Sept. 27 at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, TX, followed by a celebration of Ida's life at 4 pm at First United Methodist Church of Richardson, 503 N. Central Expressway, with Dr. Clayton Oliphint officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the "Miss Ida Scholarship for Theatre Excellence". Memorials may be mailed to Plano Senior High School, Attn: Lance Morse, Theatre Director, 2200 Indepen-dence Pkwy, Plano TX 75075 (please make check to PSHS Theatre Booster Club" and specify "Miss Ida Scholarship Fund" in the memo area of check).
