Shaw, Joan Kain Passed from this life into God's arms on April 14 following an extended decline with Alzheimer's disease. The daughter of Bessie Wilder and Forrest Kain of Fort Wayne, IN, Joan earned her undergraduate degree at Rockford College and her Masters at the University of Wisconsin in the emerging field of speech pathology. Joan traveled East to join the speech and rehabilitation team at the Easter Seal Society in Springfield, MA where she met the charming and eligible Richard Shaw. The couple was married in 1956, settling happily into domestic routine with the arrival of Susan in 1958, and Nancy in 1960. Joan continued to combine her professional and domestic roles in Springfield until a new opportunity for Rich in real estate development brought the family to Dallas in 1975. Joan and Rich put down deep roots in Texas, becoming active in their North Dallas neighborhood and church community at First United Methodist Church of Richardson. Joan enjoyed service, travel, Bible study and the many friendships that developed in these years. She served as a Stephen's Minister, Co-President of her beloved Pathfinder's Class, a member of the "Merry Marthas" Emmaus reunion group, and was named Community Volunteer of the Year by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce for her work with the church Woman's Center. She also worked as a speech pathologist in later years in the Richardson Independent School District. Undoubtedly, Joan's most cherished role in recent years was as "Grandma Joan" to six beloved grandchildren who miss her dearly. Joan is survived by her daughters, Nancy Ann Shaw and son-in-law, Michael Olvera of Dallas; Susan Shaw-Meadow and son-in-law, Robert Shaw-Meadow of San Antonio; and six grandchildren, Emily and Margaret Olvera, Nathan, Katie and Erin Shaw-Meadow, and Beth Meadow Navarrete (Daniel). Joan is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Fan Kain of Dallas, her brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Carol Shaw of Scottsdale, AZ, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 51 years, Richard Henry Shaw, her brother, John Kain, niece, Martha Shaw and nephew, David Shaw. Visitation, Monday, April 22 from 6 pm - 8 pm at Restland, 13005 Greenville Ave. Memorial service, Tuesday, April 23 at 3 pm at First United Methodist Church of Richardson, 503 North Central Expressway. Memorial gifts in memory of Joan Kain Shaw may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Richardson.
