John Maxson Obituary

Mr. John DeGolyer (Jack) Maxson, one of the most noted sound engineers of his generation, died October 21, 2016 in Dallas. He was born on 11 March 1940 in Dallas, the eldest child of John and Virginia DeGolyer Maxson.

He graduated from St. Mark's School of Texas, and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was vice-president of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. Jack was fascinated with electronics from earliest childhood, and began his career as president of the Delta Recording Company and Spot Productions. His major enterprise was the creation in his garage of Showco in 1970 with business partner Rusty Brutsche. Showco would become one of the premier sound system companies in the world. Showco's incredible client list who Jack personally worked with included The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Sir Paul McCartney and Wings, and James Taylor. This was followed by the founding with his business partners in 1984 of Vari*Lite. Vari*Lite was one of the first automated changeable color lighting systems for the stage. This groundbreaking company garnered three Emmy Awards for Jack.

In his private life, his preference was for classical music, of which he had an encyclopedic memory. He was generous with his time and money in philanthropic endeavors like the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco and The Dallas Arboretum. Jack was a dedicated third generation member of the Coon Creek Club in Athens, TX. But what he enjoyed most was spending time with his wife, daughter and amazing friends. He was very fond of extensive travelling and entertaining.

In later years Jack was a devoted husband diligently caring for his wife Sally in her battle with Alzheimer's. He married first the late Margaret Paulson of Dallas and second Sally Stocker, formally of New Orleans. He is also survived by his daughter Margaret DeGolyer (Peggy) Maxson of Austin; his siblings Virginia Buchanan-Smith of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada; Peter Flagg Maxson of Austin; and Mary Thompson of Volente. Jack is also survived by many other loving family members.

We'd also like to acknowledge Sandy Tokar for her excellent care of Jack and Sally over the past two years. The memorial service will be held at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, 8011 Douglas Ave. Dallas on Wednesday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Museum Of The American Railroad in Frisco, TX. http://www.museumoftheamericanrailroad.org/

Missing my old friends Jack, Sally and Peggy too.
We spent many a great Showco Rock Tour together, Jack mixing the live show, me recording them in my Remote Recording Studio. Jack loved loved Jazz and Classical Music as well as the Rock 'n Roll that kept us in business. I cherish the personal times spent with them at Coon Creek and on the road, here in the USA and on the world tours with the likes of The Rolling Stones.....
Over the last four years I have written a book, aptly titled "On the Road: Recording the Stars in a Golden Age of Live Music"
Jack figures in many of the stories. My favorite being meeting him at the 1979 "Havana Jam" in Cuba. A good will Music celebration, opening a small crack in the Cold War. There is a chapter in the book about that adventure with Jack.
The book is available on Amazon, if you would like to read about those adventures.
I keep this photo on my bed side book case to remember them.
RIP Jack & Sally

Jack and I shared a lot of adventures on the road with the tours, but it was the time spent with Jack and Sally as friends that I remember the most. They were an example for us all, I especially remember that in these dark times. Miss ya, Maxsons!!

Even though Jack was a customer of ours, it quickly evolved into a real friendship since we shared a tremendous passion for music. I loved the times we spent together. He was a truly good person with a kind and generous soul. His stories when he was at Showco working for the likes of the Rolling Stones, Led Zepellin, etc were highly entertaining. And he had a quite a fondness for pipe organ music which would somtimes bring him to tears.

I will truly miss him and his presence. May his essence be spread among the stars for eternity.

I echo Kieran's sentiments - Jack was a true Gentleman - calm in crisis - quietly strong - and true to kindness, honor and dignity. Many great and personal memories will be with me forever as I wish "Jaxson" his well-deserved rest and peace.

Jack was a Gentleman of the old school.
He was very kind to this "wet behind the ears" Lighting Designer in 1979.He was also a mean sound mixer !
My condolences to all his family and his many friends.
Best...............Kieran Healy

Jack Maxson was a pioneer and innovator in touring Sound and Lighting. He personally mixed Sound for the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and many other Stars, but he also loved Classical and Big Band Music. Jack was a Southern Gentleman in a rough and tumble business, he inspired the best in his tours.

Jack and Sally were great friends and he was a mentor to me for many years and will be sorely missed.

See you down the road Jack!
