Smith, Dr. Kenneth Grant Kenneth Smith of Dallas died peacefully on March 6, 2013. He was born on December 10, 1918 in Chicago, IL to Olive Ida and Charles Simpson Smith, the youngest of 4 children. He graduated from North Park Academy in Chicago in 1937. He attended Washington and Lee University where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Beta Kappa. He left college to serve as an officer during World War II returning to graduate in 1947. Ken earned a Ph.D. in Geology from Columbia University in 1953. He was fluent in Italian and read French and German. As a geological consultant, he traveled all over the world. He was a pre-doctoral instructor at the University of Michigan and later in life returned to teaching geology at Dallas Baptist University for 14 years. He authored 14 publications between 1947 and 1982. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and a member of the American Associates of Petroleum Geologists and the American Institute of Professional Geologists. He was also a member of the Dallas Petroleum Club. He taught Sunday school at Park Cities Baptist Church and was a Biblical scholar. He loved reading, sailing, fishing and was an excellent chess player. His favorite place to escape was his lake house in Manitowish Waters, WI where his family had vacationed since he was a child. Ken is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Lupe Barahona Smith. They married in London, England on Oct. 19, 1973. He is also survived by two children from a previous marriage. A memorial service will be held at Ellis Chapel, Park Cities Baptist Church, Saturday, March 9, at 2:00 pm. followed by a reception in Ellis Parlor.
