Kevin Sledge Obituary

Sledge, Kevin Douglas October 23, 1964 - June 29, 2011 On June 29, 2011, Kevin Douglas Sledge went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Kevin was born on October 23, 1964, in Dallas. He grew up in Mesquite, Texas, and graduated from North Mesquite High School, where he was president of the student council, a class favorite, and earned all-district honors in varsity soccer. After graduation, he attended Southern Methodist University, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He then moved to the Austin area, qualified for PGA school, and became a PGA Professional. He worked as a golf professional teaching the game he loved at numerous golf courses in cities throughout the southwest, including Austin, Dallas, Allen, and McKinney, Texas, and Sedona and Prescott, Arizona. In 1993, Sledge was invited to play in a tournament in Scotland against members of the Royal and Ancient. He tied the course record at Prestwick, site of the first British Open, which remained unbroken for several years. He was later the founder and president of United States Junior Team Golf, which introduced junior team competition between clubs in north and central Texas. Kevin is survived by his daughter (and pride and joy), Ellen Kathlyn Sledge, wife, Carrie Ward Sledge, mother, Jeannette Baker Sledge, and brothers, Stephen and Brian Sledge. He is also survived by Stephen's wife, Sheela Sledge, and their children, Tyler, Hayley, and Ashley; Brian's wife, Lisa Sledge, and their children, Summer, Tanner, and Ryder; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in the DFW and Granbury, Texas, areas. He is preceded in death by his father, Harley Davidson Sledge. Kevin was fun-loving and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was an avid golf, fly-fishing and sports enthusiast, who always had a great story or quip to share. He loved the SMU Mustangs, the Oregon Ducks, and the Dallas Cowboys. Kevin had a caring and generous disposition towards others-always willing to give others anything he had, even when he did not have much. He loved his family and friends dearly. He was active in the First Baptist Church of Taos, New Mexico, prior to his passing. A life celebration and memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church of Mesquite, Texas, located at 1028 South Belt Line Road. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to a special fund established to assist Kevin's six-year-old daughter, Ellen, with education and other expenses. Donations can be made to any Wells Fargo Bank "c/o Ellen Kathlyn Sledge 09/21/2004."

This is the Lanier Family in Austin. We had the pleasure of knowing Kevin through golf at Lost Creek Country Club. Our son, Jeff, spent many days at the golf course with Kevin when he was involved with junior golf. Kevin was like a mentor (big brother) to Jeff. We all loved his humor and simply enjoyed being around Kevin. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.
With love,
Beverly, Derris and Jeff

As a fraternity brother of Kevin's, I got to know him well. He had a tremendous ability to bring people together and friendship to him was exceedingly genuine and loyal. I will miss seeing him at SMU games but know that he had a great and positive impact on many, many people.

Jeannette, You could have only a wonderful, smart, funny, delightful son. I never met him, but from my years as a childhood friend and companion to you, I know that to be true. My heart cries for you.

Our deepest heartfelt prayers and loving support to Carrie, Ellen, and Kevin's family. May you each be given what you need. We are so deeply sorry for your pain, sorrow, and loss.

About Kevin ~ A tender and generous heart with a big personality who inspired, shared, uplifted, and supported. I truly appreciate having Kevin in my life. He brought me and our family so much laughter, friendship, fun, and kindness.

He will always be considered a "very dear friend" full of life, creativity, and energy. He added to our lives in many ways and I feel blessed to have known him as we did while we lived in Fairview.

Wishing us all "Peace".

I have such fond memories of our time together... your "distinctive" laugh, your energy and passion for life, your optimisim for the future, and your kindness and patience that you always gave to others. At a young age, you taught me about strength, hope, determination and family love that I so desperatly needed at that time in my life. I will always remember and be grateful for the wonderful and special life lessons we learned and shared together in our teenage years at NMHS. I only wish I could have told you these things in person, but I know that on a spiritual level, these feelings will be known by you. Thank-you for your time with all of us that knew you! I have such great memories of high school, prom, soccer, dates, friends and disagreements that we had together that you will always have a cherished place in my heart. Jeanette, Steve and Brian you will always be loved and cherished by me also, even though the time has been so long since we last spoke. Kevin was and will always be a gift from God that was given to all of us that knew him! I am certain that he has passed down all of these wonderful qualities to his daughter! My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family and friends... He will ALWAYS be "Fabulous" and missed!
Love Always,
C-7

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Kevin's passing. We were good friends when I was in high school although it's been many years since we've seen each other. He had a quirky sense of humor - you never knew what Kevin might say or do but you could always be sure you'd laugh. My thoughts & prayers are with the Sledge Family.
